The cop-killer whose crime 47 years ago was made famous by the book and movie The Onion Field was denied parole for the 11th time yesterday. Gregory Powell—who kidnapped two LAPD officers and killed one in 1963—told the California panel he was a changed man and wanted to be free before he died from his terminal prostate cancer, deputy DA Alexis De la Garza tells AP.
The panel was told, however, that the 76-year-old killer had taken no steps toward self-help or education in his decades in jail. The panel also heard from the daughter of officer Ian Campbell, who was just 3 years old when Powell killed her father. "To release him dishonors the memory of my father, law enforcement and the Los Angeles Police Department," she wrote.
