With more cities making room for cyclists, advocates of the two-wheel lifestyle (no-emissions class) are taking aim at another preserve of the gas-powered set: the drive-thru window. One Oregon cyclist got local chain Burgerville to change its policy after being refused service, and a movement was born. “If it’s not dangerous in a bike lane with cars going 35mph,” one advocate asks David Koeppel for Slashfood, “how can it be dangerous in a parking lot with people traveling less than 10mph?”
As you might’ve already, Koeppel notes the irony of (you’d think) health-conscious cyclists clamoring to super-size that. And indeed, they have an uphill climb, with the bigger fast-food chains not convinced; a McDonald’s rep says customer safety trumps bikers’ rights. “We’re not all health nuts,” says one cyclist, vowing to keep pedaling. “Everyone wants a Big Mac now and again.”
