Australian Prime Minister John Howard has taken to the YouTube web waves in a bid to quell protests this week in Sydney at the summit on Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation. If demonstrators "really are concerned about poverty and climate change, they should support APEC not attack it," Howard pleads. But it did nothing to stop protesters from breaking into an Australian power station today.
The video, more than 8 minutes long, is a conventional presentation on the background and goals of the 21-nation summit, as well as a discussion of security. But Howard refers to "violent protests" and earlier emphasizes the summit's commitment to discussing climate change. "I believe this year's APEC can make a difference where it matters," he says.
