Widow of Victim in Soccer Mob Attack Pleads for Peace

The wife of a Catholic man beaten to death by a mob of Protestant soccer fans in Northern Ireland wants no violence in her husband's name, the Telegraph reports. "He wouldn't want retaliation for it," said Evelyn McDaid, who has two black eyes and a bruised face from trying to save her husband. "He was trying to keep the peace."

Police have a dozen suspects in custody after the brutal attack, which left a second man in critical condition. The mob reportedly entered the Catholic neighborhood following a soccer game. Evelyn McDaid said the attackers claimed to be affiliated with the loyalist Ulster Defence Association, but authorities have not made any political connection.
