Hamas has stopped firing rockets at Israel for the time being, its head told the New York Times in a lengthy interview in which he discussed the militant Palestinian group’s goals. “I promise the American administration and the international community that we will be part of the solution, period,” Khaled Meshaal said, adding that Hamas wants control only of areas Israel took in 1967.
“We are with a state on the 1967 borders, based on a long-term truce”—meaning 10 years, he said. “This includes East Jerusalem, the dismantling of settlements and the right of return of the Palestinian refugees.” Still, he said, he won’t recognize Israel, calling it “the only enemy in the region.” He called President Obama’s words “different and positive,” but said Hillary Clinton was sticking to “language that reflects the old administration policies.” (More Hamas stories.)
