Barry Bonds took 21 years to set the career home run record, so the half-day delay in President Bush's congratulatory phone call probably seems like the blink of an eye. The call went out from the White House this afternoon, the Chicago Tribune reports, and Tony Snow attributed the delay to conflicting sleep schedules.
During the call, Snow said, the president told Bonds "it's great that Bonds' son was there for the homer and the hug." Earlier, the White House spokesman jousted with reporters over whether the delay in calling related to Bonds' reputed steroid use. "You guys are always trying to pick fights," said Snow. "I love that." (More Barry Bonds stories.)
