Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro didn't emerge from his hidden room unscathed when US commandos showed up at his door, sources say. According to a US official and another person familiar with the operation who spoke to NBC News, Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, suffered minor injuries—either bruising or bleeding—after apparently striking a wall or door inside a secure room in their Caracas compound. Sources who spoke to CNN say the couple ran into the low door frame of a steel door as they tried to flee.

The injuries occurred as US Delta Force operators used flash-bang devices while breaching the residence around 1am ET Saturday, but before they physically encountered the couple, the sources said. The two were flown to Stewart Air National Guard Base in New York state, where they were medically evaluated on the plane, a second source said.

Flores later appeared in public with visible facial bruising. In federal court in New York on Monday, their attorneys said both need additional medical care: Flores may have fractured ribs, while Maduro has broader health concerns. Flores' lawyer declined to elaborate on her injuries, saying only that she was in "good spirits" and that the defense looks forward to contesting the government's evidence. Both Maduro and Flores pleaded not guilty to US drug conspiracy charges. Seven US service members were also injured during the raid, Fox News reports. Sources say five have returned to duty and two are still recovering.
