Trump Says He Could Support a Gay President

President Trump isn't above mocking Pete Buttigieg's name or appearance—but he doesn't have a problem with his sexuality. In an interview with Geraldo Rivera Thursday, Trump said he could support a gay president, though some Americans might not. "I think so," Trump told the "Roadkill With Geraldo" podcast when asked if Americans would elect a gay man as president. "I think there would be some that wouldn't, and I wouldn't be among that group, to be honest with you." Rush Limbaugh was criticized by lawmakers from both parties Thursday after saying Americans wouldn't vote for a "gay guy kissing his husband on the debate stage."

"It doesn’t seem to be hurting Pete Buttigieg," said Trump, who criticized other Democratic presidential candidates, including former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg, during the interview, USA Today reports. During impeachment proceedings, Trump denied sending attorney Rudy Giuliani, another former NYC mayor, to Ukraine, but he admitted "using him" during the Geraldo interview. Trump said he relied on Giuliani to investigate alleged corruption because his dealings with the US intelligence community had left a "bad taste," CNN reports. "Other presidents had them," Trump said. "FDR had a lawyer who was practically, you know, was totally involved with government. Eisenhower had a lawyer. They all had lawyers."
