A Republican hoping to unseat Rep. Ilhan Omar has lost her Twitter account. Danielle Stella posted on her Facebook page, which is still active, that she was "permanently banned on Twitter" for posting that if an accusation against Omar is proven, "she should be tried for treason and hanged." A Twitter spokesman said the ban was imposed for repeated violations of Twitter's rules, CNN reports. Stella's post involved a conspiracy theory, which has been debunked, about the Democratic member of Congress illegally giving government information to Qatar and Iran, per Business Insider. Stella, who criticized Twitter for suspending her, would have to win the GOP primary to move on to face Omar in the Minnesota general election next year. "This just shows how far the Republican Party has fallen under Trump," Omar said in a statement. "Their campaign strategy is just threats, disinformation and smears against their opponents."
Omar has been on the receiving end of smears spread by President Trump and other Republicans, per CNN. One video shared by Trump purported to show her dancing in celebration on the anniversary of 9/11. "People often ask me why I don't fight back against" the false claims in the attacks, Omar tweeted this week, adding that her team and family wrestle with the issue.
