The busy travel weekend isn't over yet, and neither is the snow that complicates it. The National Weather Service said a broad band from the Northern Rockies, through the Northern Plains, to Michigan's Upper Peninsula can expect at least 8 inches — more than 18 inches in places. The snowfall could reach New England next week, USA Today reports. That would be the first major snowstorm of the season in the Northeast. After receiving about 10 inches of snow already this week, Minneapolis was expecting another 4 to 9 inches this weekend. "Our break from winter weather will be brief," the National Weather Service there said. The area from the southern Plains to Lower Mississippi River Valley were warned that severe thunderstorms were possible through Saturday.
The storm is developing over the Desert Southwest. Heavy snow fell in the high terrain of the Southern California desert Thursday, in spots as low as 2,000 feet, per the Washington Post. Rain was heavy in Phoenix, and Flagstaff, Arizona, could get 15 inches of snow by Friday night. Freezing rain, and slick roads, were possible as the line of storms moves northeast. The strong winds are back, too: Parts of eastern Wyoming, western Nebraska and western South Dakota have posted blizzard warnings. AccuWeather's forecast for the Black Hills of South Dakota calls for blizzard conditions and 36 inches of snow.
