Despite the swelling on the left side of John McCain's face as a result of melanoma surgery in 2000, the senator's healoth hasn't been discussed on the campaign trail    (Associated Press)

John McCain released 15,000 pages of medical records when he ran for president in 2000, but as the nation now contemplates making the 71-year-old the oldest man to occupy the Oval Office, McCain's campaign is largely silent. The Arizona senator has had four melanomas, a potentially fatal form of skin cancer, removed—though he has been cancer-free since 2000.

But his campaign has yet to make good on its promise to supply the Times with McCain's full health stats, though it said recently "his doctors consider him in very good health." His prognosis is bright according to outside experts, but "with melanoma, a patient is never completely in the clear," warned one doctor. (More John McCain stories.)
