A nor'easter is expected to develop along the East Coast just as millions of travelers head to their Thanksgiving destinations. The storm, forecast to dump rain along the coast and snow further inland, could cause delays along busy Northeast highways and has the possibility of upsetting travel plans at regional airports. "I would pack your patience," says Robert Sinclair of AAA New York. "Unfortunately, the storm is scheduled to hit right in the middle of getaway day." Sinclair—who notes that an estimated 41.3 million travelers are expected to hit the nation's highways for the holiday weekend, a 4.3% increase over last year—says travelers should consider traveling today or Thursday, instead of tomorrow.
Precipitation is forecast to sweep in from the south tonight into tomorrow morning and exit the region on Thursday morning. As of yesterday, the highest amount of snow is expected to fall in northeastern Pennsylvania, the Catskills, and into Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine; up to 10 inches is possible in some places, forecasters say. Officials at the three major NYC-area airports—Kennedy, LaGuardia, and Newark—are "monitoring weather forecasts carefully" and are ready to take action if needed, says a spokesman for the Port Authority of NY and NJ. American Airlines is letting passengers flying to some Northeast cities tomorrow move their flights for free to today or Thursday; Delta has a similar waiver for tomorrow's flights to the region but is only letting passengers reschedule for flights on Thursday or Friday.
