Firefighter Killed During His Wedding Party—by Cop

An especially tragic story out of Kansas City, Mo., where a firefighter celebrating his own wedding was shot and killed—by a police officer. KCTV reports that the uniformed police officer wasn't on duty but was "providing security" near where a disturbance was called in early yesterday. The officer was told that a cab driver had been assaulted, and arrived at the scene to find groom Anthony Bruno. The 26-year-old allegedly ran away from the officer, who gave chase, until "the suspect began fighting the officer in an assaultive manner," per a rep from the KCPD.

The rep says the unnamed officer sustained serious injuries, having been "hit pretty hard and repeatedly during the fight" in the vicinity of his head. (KSHB reports he'll need surgery for his injuries.) "Fearing for his life, the officer fired his duty weapon striking the suspect" around 2:30am; he then tried to perform CPR on Bruno. Bruno's family says the third-generation firefighter, who had been with the department five years, had taken a drunk friend to the cab stand to arrange a ride for him, and that an argument erupted over the fare. According to a family member, the groom had married two weeks earlier in Florida, but was having a reception in Kansas City. (More grooms stories.)
