Militants crossed from Egypt's Sinai Peninsula into Israel this morning, attacking civilians working on a border fence with anti-tank missiles, killing one Israeli workman, reports the AP. Israeli security forces responded by killing two of the militants, and are looking for more possible attackers. Later this morning, the Israeli military carried out an airstrike on two men riding a motorcycle in the northern Gaza Strip; an Israel military spokesman said those men were also militants, but were unrelated to the morning attack.
Israel has expressed concern that ongoing political chaos in Egypt is leading to a worsening of security along the border. "We see here a disturbing deterioration in Egyptian control in the Sinai," said Defense Minister Ehud Barak. The border attack was the first since last August, when five people were killed in a series of attacks. (More Gaza stories.)
