Fox News chief Roger Ailes was furious when Sarah Palin decided to announce her non-candidacy outside of the network, sources tell New York. Ailes—who grumbled that he "paid her for two years to make this announcement on my network"—was so angry that he considered yanking Palin off the air until her $1 million-a-year contract expires in 2013, the sources say.
Palin decided to make the announcement away from Fox because she was irked by the amount of time the network was giving Karl Rove, according to a Palin adviser. A Fox exec smoothed things over between Ailes and Palin, but her future at the network is still uncertain. Ailes says he hired Palin because she was "hot and got ratings," but she hasn't performed as well as he had hoped, and the end of speculation about a 2012 bid has reduced some of her appeal as a pundit.
