Verizon Ditching Unlimited Data Plans

Verizon is becoming the latest carrier to scrap unlimited data plans in favor of tiered ones. As of tomorrow, new Verizon customers will be offered options ranging from $30 for 2 GB per month to $80 for 10 GB per month, Fierce Wireless reports. Existing customers will be allowed to keep their unlimited plans for now, but customers upgrading from standard cell phones to smartphones won't be able to get unlimited plans after tomorrow.

AT&T and T-Mobile have already switched to metered usage, leaving Sprint Nextel as the only Tier 1 carrier still offering unlimited usage plans to new customers. "Let's be frank: We are setting the stage for the long term," said a Verizon Wireless spokeswoman. "But it is giving customers much more control about how they want to spend their discretionary dollars on wireless." (More data stories.)
