Rumsfeld: I Would Have Sent Osama to Gitmo

If the US had ever come up with Osama bin Laden, the al-Qaeda honcho would likely have headed straight to Gitmo: “He’d probably be subjected to a military commission,” Donald Rumsfeld told CNN today. But the defense secretary says he wouldn't have visited: "No. He's not my type." Of course, the whole line of speculation is a moot point, but Politico notes that Rumsfeld seemed to dodge some of the blame: "We wanted to find him and we haven’t,” Rumsfeld said. “A manhunt is not what the Department of Defense is organized, trained, and equipped to do." Elsewhere on the Sunday dial:

• The House GOP's proposed cuts are "irresponsible and reckless," says Rep. Chris Van Hollen, jabbing back at John Boehner's "So be it" response to resulting job losses.
• But President Obama's "failed to lead" on deficit reduction, responded Rep. Paul Ryan, so "we intend to pick up where he left off." But "We're not looking for a government shutdown."
• "Everything has to be on the table," in budget talks, says Oklahoma Republican Tom Coburn, "from social security to the defense department."
