The New York City snow scandal gets more scandalous: Following reports that sanitation workers deliberately slowed down clean-up efforts, investigators are now looking into a report that four of those workers—supervisors, no less—skipped out on their duties to drink beer in their car. The New York Post ran the report yesterday, sparking an official follow-up, CNN reports. Officials are urging anyone with information about “deliberate inaction or wrongdoing” to step forward.
Witnesses claim they saw four on-duty sanitation supervisors buy two six-packs and then sit in an idling department car overnight on Monday, even though a bus was stranded in the snow nearby and needed assistance. The workers then allegedly told their bosses they had run out of gas. Officials continue to investigate earlier reports of a deliberate slowdown to protest budget cuts, with one New York City councilman claiming at least five employees have come to him admitting the plot. He adds that an unusually high number of sanitation workers—nearly 10% of the work force—called in sick or claimed an emergency after the storm hit.
