New Orleans Buries Katrina —Literally

Five years after Hurricane Katrina changed the face of New Orleans forever, residents of St. Bernard Parish yesterday put her to rest with a mock funeral. Parishioners filed past an empty casket, dropping in notes, reports the Times-Picayune. "Goodbye bitch," read the note from the former parish president. “To commemorate what happened five years ago, we come together in grief, in gratitude and with hope,” said the archibishop presiding over the service, wryly acknowledging applause as the casket closed.

“I hope the message is we’re really going to bury this witch. She was not a nice person, Katrina,” another community leader told the Times-Picayune. “You can take homes, business, churches, cars, things, you can take them away, but you can’t take away what St. Bernard is and that’s our people.” To view pictures of the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, click here.
