Several prominent Democrats believe Vicki Kennedy is the party's best shot for reclaiming the seat currently held by Scott Brown in 2012, and have been quietly promoting her as their candidate of choice—though according to close sources, she still has no plans to run. However, the Washington Post notes that the late Senator's wife has in some ways been playing the part of a would-be candidate, co-hosting fundraisers and events for politicians and making appearances around the country.
But those close to the Kennedys say the idea of her running is causing tension, especially among her stepsons, who are reportedly grumbling that her activities are already sapping her of the focus needed to promote their father's legacy and build the endowment of the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the Senate. In a long interview with the Boston Globe, Vicki, who declined to be interviewed by the Post, spoke of running, saying, "when you get into that level, of really thinking about really living his life, that’s a step that’s just, just too hard."
