World / Brice Hortefeux France May Toss Out Polygamist Foreigners Along with those who practice female genital mutilation By Kevin Spak, Newser Staff Posted Aug 9, 2010 10:16 AM CDT Copied France's Minister of Interior, Brice Hortefeux, delivers his answer during the question Government session at the National Assembly in Paris, in this Sept. 15, 2009 file photo. (AP Photo/Francois Mori) France’s Interior Minister wants immigrants to lose their citizenship if they practice polygamy or female genital mutilation or commit any other “serious wrongdoing.” This new punishment, which could be law by the end of the year, would apply to anyone with a foreign background, even if they were born in France, the Daily Telegraph reports. Brice Hortefeux’s comments came in reference to an Algerian-born French Muslim accused of regularly raping a woman between 2003 and 2007; that man has also been charged with claiming thousands in state aid for 15 children he had with four different women. Hortefeux said he wanted the man stripped of his nationality as part of a “national war on delinquency.” Nicolas Sarkozy recently called for the same punishment for foreigners who attack police.
