A federal judge will make a major ruling today on whether or not gay marriage is a constitutionally guaranteed right. Judge Vaughn R. Walker, a George H.W. Bush nominee, will decide whether California’s Proposition 8 violates the equal protection guarantee in the US Constitution, based on a 2½ week trial he presided over in January. Most of the testimony given in that trial favored gay marriage, notes the LA Times.
No matter what Walker decides, the case is all but certain to be appealed first to the US 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, and finally to the Supreme Court. The ruling is expected sometime between 1pm and 3pm. (More gay marriage stories.)
