World / Al Gore Gore, Wolfowitz Team Up to Fight Malaysia Trial They don't agree on much, except that Anwar Ibrahim is being railroaded By Jane Yager, Newser Staff Posted Aug 4, 2010 9:31 AM CDT Copied Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim gestures as he talks with his lawyers at the High Court in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Monday, Aug. 2, 2010. (AP Photo/Mark Baker) The case of persecuted Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim has created an unlikely pair of allies: Al Gore and Paul Wolfowitz. They argue in a joint editorial for the Wall Street Journal that the US must pressure Malaysia to stop the politically motivated trial Anwar is currently facing on dubious sodomy charges—calling it a trial that "casts a troubling shadow over the future of a nation that should be a model for other Muslim countries." Anwar's conviction, which could mean a 20-year sentence for the 63-year-old, would destroy "the confidence of millions of Malaysians in the possibility of justice under the law," Gore and Wolfowitz write. "We urge our own government to make clear the importance the US attaches to the role of the law in sustaining a political process in which justice and freedom are natural allies...We urge those in the Malaysian government who will decide this matter to act with wisdom."
