The US has a detailed plan ready to attack Iran if necessary to prevent it from making nuclear weapons, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff revealed yesterday. “I hope we don’t get to that, but it’s an important option, and it’s one that’s well understood," Admiral Mike Mullen said on NBC's Meet the Press. The declaration sparked an immediate angry reaction from Iran, which vowed a “firm response” to any US military action, reports the Telegraph.

“We will defend ourselves if America or Israel resort to any hostile measures against our vital values,” said the deputy head of the Revolutionary Guards. Mullen did not reveal any details of the plan, and acknowledged that a military strike could have severe “unintended consequences" in an "incredibly unstable part of the world." He said he was still hopeful that diplomatic efforts and sanctions might convince Iran to suspend its nuclear enrichment program, which the US is convinced is part of nuclear weapons development.
