Liberals may not like the Tea Party's politics, but they admire its organizing skills. About 170 left-leaning groups are forming a coalition known as One Nation with a pledge to "counter the tea party narrative," reports the Washington Post. Progressives have been generally disappointed with the Obama administration (Eric Alterman articulates it in a widely discussed essay in the Nation) and want to regain their mojo on everything from immigration reform to unemployment relief to the pro-union card check bill.
"Having been confronted with the specter of the tea party, we felt it urgent to organize the majority of this country, which voted in 2008 and has gone back to the couch," said NAACP chief Benjamin Jealous. "We've been split off in different directions." The first goal is a major march in Washington in October.
