If you thought Arizona couldn't get any less hospitable to Hispanic people—er, illegal immigrants—think again. Barry Wong, who's running for the state's Corporation Commission, is pushing a plan to cut off electricity to any building suspected of harboring illegal immigrants. He'd have the power to do that, he contends, because the commission regulates utility rates, and the blackout would lower rates for everyone else.
Mediate spotlights a great interview Wong gave to Fox's Stuart Varney, in which Varney struggles to take Wong seriously. "I suspect there's a little tongue in cheek here," Varney began. "You don't really want to cut power to illegal immigrants, do you?" When Wong insisted that he was very serious, Varney pointed out that it "would be unconstitutional, illegal, and wildly impractical." Wong was unconvinced, saying he firmly believes voters support the idea.
