Hey, Media, Lay Off the 'Twihard' Moms

Every time a Twilight film comes out, so do the stories about the vampire franchise’s apparently craziest group of fans: grown women. At best, these women come off “idealistic, dreamy, eager to erase their boring chicken nugget reality with 90 minutes of vegetarian vampire fantasy, maybe a little shrill,” writes Jessanne Collins at Salon. At worst, they’re painted as “hysterical, incompetent, insane, even dangerous.” But why?

“Women have passions and interests. A variety of them, even! Why is it unusual that they express them en masse?” she continues. America is, after all, “a nation of rabid fans”—just look at the line outside an Apple store before a new product is launched if you don’t believe it. “We love loving things that other people love. We love loving things, period.” And those “Twihard” moms, far from being crazy, are “really quite typical.”
