Representatives of a new legal defense fund for Sarah Palin have slammed ethics investigations into the former Alaska governor 's actions as a "massive witch hunt" organized by "left-wing activists." The unsigned email also lambastes a state panel declaration last week that Palin's last defense fund was illegal, calling it a victory for Palin's enemies and "their vicious campaign to smear, bankrupt, and force this dedicated public servant and conservative leader out of politics." Those enemies include the Democratic National Committee, which the email claims was behind many of the ethics complaints.
Alaska Democratic Party members blasted the charges on their web site as a fabrication. The email was prepared by political consulting group RaiseDigital with input from "Palin associates," reports AP. An early draft email mistakenly sent out was riddled with mistakes, such as the claim that Palin had spent "millions" of her own money to refute ethics charges. Most of the 27 ethics complaints against Palin have been dismissed. Palin, however, has agreed to reimburse Alaska for family trips taken at taxpayer expense to settle one of the complaints, and a state panel found she violated ethics rules linked to forcing out a public safety commissioner who refused her demand to fire a state trooper.
