Drivers crawling along a traffic-filled highway outside St. Louis could do little more than watch, horrified, as a shot and bleeding woman scrambled out of a car and ran across the road, banging on windows and crying for help. What unfolded happened so quickly, no one had time to come to her aid: Ashley Oliver's boyfriend chased her down I-64 and shot her again, this time fatally, then killed himself.
"She was running to cars saying, 'Please help me! Please help me!" one driver told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "We were going to help until we saw that gun." The motive remains unclear, and the only witness to what happened just before the shooting began is gunman Tommie Hill's 7-year-old daughter, who was in the car at the time but wasn't hurt. "I don't know what started this," said a police sergeant. "And we may never know." (More highways stories.)
