Feds Open Inquiry Into Fusion, Milan Floor Mats

Another automaker is under investigation for possible floor mat trouble. This time it's Ford, the subject of an NHTSA inquiry into its Fusion and Mercury Milan models. The agency has received complaints that the automaker's rubber, all-weather mats could trap accelerator pedals, reports the Detroit Free Press. Unlike previous incidents involving Toyota vehicles, no accidents have been blamed on the mats.

The investigation got a boost when Dan Edmunds, director of testing for the automotive site Edmunds.com, experienced the problem himself and made a video. The trouble apparently arises when people stack a rubber mat on top of the standard floor mat, instead of removing the original first. About 250,000 cars may be affected.
