A second-grade girl pulled Michelle Obama into the immigration debate yesterday, putting a human face on the issue. “My mom says … Barack Obama is taking away everybody that doesn't have papers,” she told the first lady, who was visiting her elementary school along with her Mexican counterpart Margarita Zavala. “That's something that we have to work on, right?” Obama responded, “To make sure that people can be here with the right kind of papers, right?”

“But my mom doesn't have papers,” the girl protested. It's unclear if Obama heard or properly understood her, reports the AP. She replied: “We have to work on that. We have to fix that.” The school won't identify the student, and tells the AP that it won't ask about her parents. “"We serve every child who comes through the door,” the principal said. “We don't ask that kind of question.” (More Michelle Obama stories.)
