Sen. Robert Menendez is calling on baseball players of all ethnicities to protest Arizona's new immigration law by boycotting the 2011 All-Star Game in Phoenix. "While I understand the frustration about the failures of our current system, states should not be permitted to enact their own discriminatory immigration laws while the federal government works to reform our laws," says Menendez, the Senate's sole Latino.
The New Jersey Democrat is preaching to the choir, notes the Washington Times. He addressed his appeal to the executive director of the players' union, Michael Weiner, who has already publicly opposed the new law. In his letter to Weiner, Menendez calls the Arizona law "an embarrassment to our country."
