The guy who found (or, depending on your interpretation of California law, stole) a prototype for the next generation of iPhone is 21-year-old occasional college student Brian Hogan, Wired reports, and he's very sorry. “He regrets his mistake in not doing more to return the phone,” his lawyer said today in a statement. He confirms that Gizmodo paid him for the phone, but “Brian thought it was so that they could review the phone.”
Hogan does a lot of volunteer work, his lawyer says, and "is the kind of young man that any parent would be proud to have as their son." But police say he “is very definitely ... being looked at as a suspect in theft. Assuming there's ultimately a crime here.” Finding property can be theft in California if you don't try to return it. Hogan's efforts were apparently pretty limited—he had a friend call Apple Care. That's a far cry from Gizmodo's version, in which he “called a lot of Apple numbers” trying to get someone to take him seriously. Wired also reveals that it got an e-mail, from another address, asking if they'd be interested in buying the phone, indicating that Hogan shopped it around. (More iPhone 4 stories.)
