The majority of Americans want to reign in spending on Iraq and Afghanistan, a new Washington Post-ABC News poll shows, with 69% opposing the full funding of President Bush's $190 billion request. Bush scores a 33% approval rating, matching his career low, with approval for Congress at 29%, a 14-point drop since Democrats took control in January.

While approval of Democrats is higher than Republicans in Congress (38% to 29%), most Americans don't feel Congress has pushed hard enough to end the war, the Post reports. At the same time, there is no consensus on an appropriate strategy for withdrawal of American troops. Nearly 60% said in July they wanted troop drawdowns to begin; 52% now say Bush's plan for removing some troops by next summer is either right or too hasty. (More Iraq war stories.)
