Authorities have apprehended Joshua Matthew Stone, the last of the nine Hutaree militia members indicted yesterday for an alleged plot to kill law enforcement officials. Stone, son of Hutaree leader David Brian Stone, was found hiding in a home yesterday with five adults and a toddler. There was a standoff, but he emerged peacefully after authorities played taped messages from his family over a loudspeaker. The others in the home were taken into custody as well.
Four members of the Stone family—David, his wife Tina, and both his adult sons—are among the nine indicted in the cop-killing plot. “It started out as a Christian thing,” says Stone’s ex-wife. “I think David started to take it a little too far. He dragged a lot of people with him.” According to one Michigan Militia leader, the Hutaree are a fringe group who believe the world is ending, and that they must take up arms to fight the Antichrist.
