Mary Elizabeth Williams would like Family Guy to tone down its shtick a bit, because she agrees with Sarah and Bristol Palin that the show poked unnecessary fun at son Trig...and “I don’t want to have to find myself agreeing with Sarah Palin again for a long time,” she writes. Sure, there's no such thing as an off-limit topic in comedy, but this episode stunk not just “because of the low blow at Palin,” but “for the overall insensitivity of the whole plotline"—like when Stewie goes on to call the Down Syndrome character "that little whore."
“We get that it's Family Guy’s job to be all shocking and taboo breaking,” Williams writes on Salon. “But maybe they can stick to picking on targets their own size instead of mocking the disabled.” And she has to admit that the mother-daughter team of Sarah and Bristol’s response to the distasteful slight was spot-on. “I've got to hand it to them—when the Palin women are right, they're right.” (More Family Guy Sarah Palin stories.)
