American Wescott Defends Snowboardcross Gold

Seth Wescott pulled a huge comeback this afternoon in snowboardcross, overtaking Canadian Mike Robertson to score the second US gold medal of the Vancouver Olympics and defend the title he won In 2006. The 33-year-old Maine native had been injured and racing poorly, but turned it on down the stretch at Cypress Mountain.

• American Lindsey Vonn managed the fastest time in practice on the upper part of the course that will host the women’s downhill—despite the nagging shin injury that has her at less than full strength. The course still isn’t in great shape, skiers tell AP: “It’s so bumpy,” says German Maria Riesch. “It’s just a fight from the top to the bottom, and that’s not so much fun.”
• NHL Sidney Crosby arrived in Vancouver, hoping to lead Canada to just its second hockey gold in 58 years. The host squad opens against Norway tomorrow, and Crosby, 22, says he’s fine with the pressure. “That’s something as Canadians that we’ve grown up around. We’ve all watched it, and we’ve probably been the fan expecting good results,” the Pittsburgh Penguins star says. “I think that’s typical and that’s to be expected. There’s nothing wrong with that.”
