McCanns' Own Request Led to Questioning

Kate and Gerry McCann's request that Portuguese police go back over evidence in the case of their daughter's disappearance led investigators to suspect them, reports the Guardian. The sniffer dogs brought in detected the "scent of death" on Kate's clothes, and new DNA evidence seemed to indicate that Madeleine's body had been in the McCanns' trunk.

The McCanns asked that the police do a "more thorough" investigation after initial efforts seemed to be slowing down. The new evidence subsequently discovered led police to name both parents as suspects, though officials appear to be backing down from that theory.
