Tom Tancredo kicked off the National Tea Party Convention last night with a full blast of vitriol, saying “Barack Hussein Obama” had been elected because “we do not have a civics, literacy test before people can vote. People who could not even spell the word vote, or say it in English, put a committed socialist ideologue in the White House.”
But Tancredo was happy with that outcome. “Thank God John McCain lost,” he said, arguing that he would have been soft on immigration, “eliminating those pesky things called borders,” and the Tea Party movement wouldn’t exist. Tancredo was speaking before an audience of about 600 people, which is roughly how many tickets organizers say they’ve sold to the convention—a two-day pass costs $549, a price that has outraged some tea partiers.
