Clinton Pushes China to Probe Google Attacks

Hillary Clinton called today for China to investigate recent cyberattacks on Google, and included that country’s communist regime on a list of nations hindering their citizens’ fundamental “freedom to connect” on the Internet. “Countries that restrict free access to information or violate the basic rights of Internet users risk walling themselves off from the progress of the next century,” the Secretary of State noted in the Washington speech.

With Google threatening to pull out of China over the attacks, and continuing pressure to censor content, Clinton urged US companies to follow that lead. “I hope that refusal to support politically motivated censorship will become a trademark characteristic of American technology companies,” she said. “It should be part of our national brand. I’m confident that consumers worldwide will reward firms that respect these principles.”
