The fight against California’s gay-marriage ban got a surprise enlistee today, in the person of Cindy McCain—whose husband, Sen. John McCain, opposed same-sex weddings as the Republican presidential nominee in 2008. Few volunteers “have surprised us more,” the NO H8 Campaign says, noting that “aligning yourself with the platform of gay marriage as a Republican still tends to be very stigmatic.”
In joining daughter Meghan—who has spoken out against Proposition 8 and for same-sex marriage—in the organization’s photo project, “Cindy McCain wanted to participate in the campaign to show people that party doesn’t matter—marriage equality isn’t a Republican issue any more than it is a Democratic issue,” the statement continues. “It’s about human rights, and everybody being treated equally in the eyes of the law that runs and protects this country.”
