President Obama reaffirmed his commitment to relief in Haiti, telling the survivors of the massive earthquake "that we will do what it takes to save lives and help people get back on their feet." Obama spoke this afternoon—his third public statement in as many days—following a phone conversation with Rene Preval, Haiti's president. The Pentagon expects 3,000 soldiers and 2,000 Marines to arrive in Haiti over the weekend to distribute food, water, and supplies.
Support and personnel from other countries around the world are also making their way to the country, the Los Angeles Times reports. “The entire world stands with the people and government of Haiti, for in Haiti’s devastation we all see the common humanity that we share," Obama said. "Haitians are our neighbors in the Americas, and for Americans they are family and friends." (More Haiti stories.)
