Roman Polanski and his wife are suing several French publications for invading their privacy during the film director's house arrest. The photographs the couple object to include one of Polanski standing at the window of his Swiss chalet, and one of Polanski's wife, Emmanuel Seigner, walking down a street. The pair are seeking substantial damages from the newspapers and magazine, AP reports.
"The legal case against Polanski in no way justifies the paparazzi's stalking of his wife and children," a lawyer for Polanski told a French court yesterday. Polanski "has feared the media like the plague" ever since his wife Sharon Tate was murdered by Charles Manson's followers, the lawyer said. Attorneys for the sued publications argue that the Polanski photos are a legitimate depiction of a major news story. Polanski was busted in Switzerland last year for fleeing a Los Angeles conviction for sex with a 13-year-old girl.
