Judges and barristers in England and Wales have been wearing horse-hair wigs and black gowns to court since the 1600s, but that could all change depending on the results of an official survey seeking opinions from those who sport the hairpieces. The Lord Chief Justice will make a final decision. A change is only being considered for civil and family courts; criminal court dress will remain the same.
Supporters of the anachronistic garb feel it sets a proper tone for court proceedings while others feel it's slightly ridiculous. "I find it strange there is a big debate," said one barrister. "The public actually likes the wig—they think it adds gravitas to court proceedings." (More Wales stories.)
