With the Bowl Championship Series title game set for Thursday night at the Rose Bowl, a Hollywood ending is called for—meaning, Chris Dufresne writes, a Texas victory. After all, it was 4 years ago on that very field that Vince Young showed a young Colt McCoy how to win a national championship, and against the man who beat him out for the Heisman; McCoy’s now the Longhorns’ studly quarterback, and is facing Alabama running back Mark Ingram, the Heisman winner.
But, Dufresne hedges in the Los Angles Times, “Football games aren’t won with inspiring pre-game speeches or because “wouldn’t it be neat if Colt McCoy won 4 years after Vince Young?” Noting the Crimson Tide’s NFL-like proficiency, melded by former NFL coach Nick Saban, “football games are won when gigantic men and serious coaches implement meticulous plans.” Dufresne concludes: “Let’s say Texas wins but not believe it. Maybe fate can carry the night for Texas. Or maybe it will be Alabama, as a matter of facts.”
