A federal grand jury today indicted Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab on charges that he tried to blow up Detroit-bound Flight 253. The grand jury indicted the 23-year-old Nigerian on six counts, the most serious of which is the attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction. It carries a life sentence. No specific mention of terrorism is mentioned in the seven-page indictment.
The other five counts are: attempted murder within the special aircraft jurisdiction of the United States, willful attempt to destroy and wreck an aircraft within the special aircraft jurisdiction of the United States, willfully placing a destructive device on an aircraft, and two counts possession of a destructive device in furtherance of a crime of violence.
