Baby-Sitters Club Is Back

The latest pop culture franchise to get a reboot doesn’t involve Transformers, GI Joe, or superheroes: Just a bunch of pre-teen baby-sitters. Yes, the Baby-Sitters Club is making a comeback, complete with reissues of the first two volumes and an all-new prequel that explores the once-popular characters’ lives during the summer before their 213-book, 14-year junior high experience began in 1986, the New York Times reports.

Scholastic got the idea from original fans of the series—now “teachers, librarians, mothers,” says an editor—begging for a comeback. “When I started to think about the books with a certain amount of nostalgia, I was happy to revisit them,” says author Ann M. Martin, who eschewed fan suggestions for a reunion novel in favor of the prequel. But not everything will be the same: Editors are updating dated references like “cassette players” and “perms” for the reissues.
