Rather than wait for Argentina’s top court to rule on their status, two HIV-positive gay men married today in the southern city of Ushuaia, after a special decree from the region’s governor. The nuptials—uniting Alex Freyre, 39, and Jose Maria Di Bello, 41—are a first for Latin America, the BBC reports, noting that the decree takes advantage of a legal loophole: Argentina’s civil code forbids gay marriage, but its constitution contains no opinion.
