Human Events has named Dick Cheney its conservative of the year, tapping old Bush administration cohort John Bolton to sing his praises. Bolton thinks it's remarkable that Cheney, a man not running for office or lobbying, can cause such consternation in Washington. How does he do it? “The irrefutable answer is that what Cheney is saying, primarily on foreign policy, defense, and anti-terrorism, makes sense to more and more American citizens.”

Particularly triumphal was Cheney’s “historic” speech at the AEI, where he offered “a vigorous defense” of torture, Guantanamo Bay, and the national security benefits of such a “vigorous program of intelligence gathering.” Obama’s decision to hold a speech on the same topic beforehand was “surprising, unprecedented and even unpresidential,” proving the White House is scared. But “Cheney’s quiet, inner-directed motivation is simply impervious to the attacks. Of course he is the conservative of the year!” (More Dick Cheney stories.)
