President Obama’s support among his fellow Democrats—yep, looking at you, Howard Dean—is in a steeper dive than his opinion-poll numbers, and reminds David Broder of the last months of George W. Bush’s administration. But that was 7 years in for Republicans, he writes in the Washington Post. “I never thought we’d see Barack Obama face a similar problem before his first year was over.”
And the shoulders are only going to get colder as November nears. “The closer we get to the midterm elections, when they will be on the ballot and he will not, the more members of Congress … will judge what is best for themselves and the less they’ll be swayed by Obama,” Broder predicts. “He may feel lonely now, but he ain't seen nothing yet.”
